National AI Literacy Day Resources
Published 8 days ago • 5 min read
This Friday, March 28th, marks National AI Literacy Day - a day of learning and conversation around one big question: “What is AI?” Students, parents, educators, and community members are encouraged to join in, exploring how AI is transforming how we live, learn, and work.
This year, I had the opportunity to serve on the advisory board, and I’ve been working behind the scenes to put together a few meaningful sessions and resources that are designed to help deepen your understanding of AI, explore its ethical implications, and empower you to lead with confidence and curiosity in this rapidly changing world - hope to see you there!
Synchronous Sessions
9 am: Exploring AI for Young Learners: An Authentic Conversation with Educators- Join us for a lively and authentic conversation with educators who are at the forefront of integrating AI into childhood education. Discover how AI is transforming the learning landscape for the better - making it more interactive, inclusive, and inspiring for young minds.
12 pm: Students for Innovation: AI literacy to support the next generation - Led by student advocates from Students for Innovation, this event highlights the importance of AI literacy in shaping responsible, informed citizens in a tech-driven world. Our young leaders will share insights on how AI impacts our daily lives and why understanding it is crucial for everyone, especially students. Through their stories and anecdotes of advocacy, learn about the essential role of AI literacy in education, its potential to drive innovation, and why it should be a fundamental component of curricular development across schools nationwide.
1 pm: Join Tim Needles, Soham, and I for NYSCATE’s National AI Literacy Day webinar, where we’ll talk about why AI literacy matters now more than ever - and how we can spread awareness and empower both educators and students.
We must instill responsibility and critical thinking in our teachers and students. To achieve this, I have assigned AI users the following two roles:
Detective: AI users must understand that AI-generated content is not always accurate and may produce misinformation or biased results, so it is important to question the output and make necessary adjustments. This concept is similar to media literacy, where students are taught to question the credibility of resources found online and identify reliable sources that confirm their findings.
DJ: Just like a DJ, we can remix our ideas with the AI-generated output to make it our own. This also helps users take ownership of their work, ensure that it aligns with their unique perspectives and voices, and develop a sense of agency over the final product.
Check out these scenarios designed by Students for Innovation to help teachers facilitate discussions in the classroom. It's essential to recognize that what is acceptable can vary from teacher to teacher and assignment to assignment. Use these conversation starters to engage your students and tailor classroom standards to fit the specific dynamics of each task.
AI CITATION GUIDES! It's imperative that we educate our students to attribute proper credit to all sources, including those powered by AI. This will foster academic integrity and nurture responsible research practices.
